Rather than treating the Declaration as a distant historical document, the film explores how its central principles — equality, liberty, natural rights, and government by consent — continue to shape conversations in classrooms today. Through the framework of civil discourse, students are invited to engage with difficult questions: What did the Declaration mean in 1776? Who was included in its promise, and who was left out? How have different generations worked to expand those ideals? And what responsibilities do citizens have in carrying them forward? Inspired in part by Dr. King's description of the Declaration as a promissory note, "Fulfilling the Promise" examines the ongoing effort to make America's founding words more fully real for future generations.
