Set in the suburbs of Toronto, Symphony of Light and Shadow follows two sixteen-year-old cousins brought together under one roof - and the unlikely friendship that transforms them both. Cici is Chinese-Canadian: bubbly, fearless, and impossible not to love. Jill has just arrived from China - reserved, disciplined, and quietly extraordinary. Where Cici blazes through life without hesitation, Jill holds back, hiding her remarkable talent for violin behind a wall of self-doubt she has spent years building. As the two navigate high school life - new friendships, cultural clashes, and the universal awkwardness of adolescence - their family is tested when Cici's mother is suddenly unable to work.
